Royal patronage of Odia language was a turning point for the race

In his book Palm Leaf Etchings of Orissa, Mr. Durga Prasad Patnaik wrote that the earliest books in Odia language are the Sisu Veda and Saptanga. These two books provide links between the early Odia and the Odia of Sarala Das and Markanda Das.

@pattaprateek is correct. Also as per the book Medieval Orissa: A Socio Economic Study by Shishir Kumar Panda, Sisuveda though Shaivite in content & deals with esoteric knowledge of Tantra, have shadow of Buddhist Apabhamsa composition. Some said it's an extension of Charjyapada.

So, let us take a look at the results.
MadhuBabu wins by a wide margin, as expected. That is not surprising. He was the first one to consciously articulate Odia identity and succeeded to a great extent.

His efforts not just led to formation of a separate Odia state, but, for the first time, made Odias aware of their rights and  conscious of their identity. He was also the first one in modern Odisha to explicitly argue that ShriJagannath can be the symbol of Odia identity.
Beyond Madhubabu, it is not so obvious.
Kapilendra Deva was the first Odia king and introduced, in his courts, Odia language, till then spoken only by common people. That was a giant leap. His consciousness of his Odianess manifests in many ways.
This royal patronage of Odia language was a turning point for the race and gave rise to Odia literature.
Sarala Das' Mahabharata was not just in Odia language but was khanti (pure) Odia in every way possible, including making Judhisthira marrying a Jajpur girl.
Sarala Das' importance is not just because he wrote in Odia language. He made Mahabharata an Odia Mahabharata, with local tales, typical Odia characters and even making Judhisthira marry an Odia girl. That is a major contribution towards an identity.

Sarala Das started it but Atibadi took to every odia. He created a culture of respect for the written word within the Odia society, that survives till date.
Bhagabata is there in many languages, but nowhere does it occupy the status in the cultural life as it does in Odisha.
That brings us to Biju Babu. Did he do anything for Odia identity? Not consciously.
But at a time Odias were neglected, had no courage to ask for their rights, Biju babu towered as a leader nationally.  He made outsiders realize that Odias were a brave race and they still are.
I am glad people got the question and did not ask about non-inclusion of #KharabelaTheGreat, #Utkalamani, #NarasinhaDeva etc. Had it been about the land, they would have featured significantly. So would have #Jayadeva.

The corollary is that he questioned the authenticity of traditionally revered texts by introducing suspicion and giving credence to parallel narratives. This postmodernist technique might have contributed much for fostering a liberal and plural religious environment across Odisha.

Timeline of Odia literature that I made about three years ago. Should make a revised version probably, considering the greater number of books & references I now have access to. https://t.co/eNQxtUPk35

Thanks! Yes, they were contemporary but Khuntia was slightly after Bhanja. In Khuntia's Ramayana, one finds several mentions of the nature 'sing this in the tune of Bhanja's chhanda'. It is obvious that Bhanja had gathered an impressive following by the time Khuntia is writing.
Of all poet-musicians I know, Gaurahari Parichha of Paralakhemundi probably lived the longest. 1794-1884. Some others state 1794-1893 also. Everyone agrees that he was in his 90s.

Just In: Google translate app is updated with Odia language support. It brings handwriting input for the language too. https://t.co/YaNoufikhk

Sick and tired of whining, begging, outraging and shouting ourselves hoarse for Odia and Odisha to be included and acknowledged.
It's time for every Odia to take a vow today - BE SO GOOD, THEY CAN'T IGNORE YOU.

In those days female singing  was strictly prohibited in Odia families. Late Sunanda Patnaik once reminicensed that  she was asked in her early days of singing,"କି ଲୋ, ବାଇଜୀ ହବୁ ନା କି?"In reply she said that she was even ready for ବାସନ ମାଞ୍ଜିବା କାମ at ବାଇଜୀ house to learn music.

LPs were introduced way back in 1948. It took long 25 years to reach it in Odia music industry.
