Let's retrieve, restore, and archive

With the miracle of technology, connectivity, and social media, lets retrieve, restore and archiv the Missed Treasure of Odia film & Odia music.
I am very happy and excited to be with twitter.

Plz share if anyone remembers the dubbed Odia movie names (alongwith the original) which were made for greater reach regionally. 1. Bhagya (Taqdeer 1967 in Hindi) @NathTusar @OdiaCulture @OdiaCulture @odiafilmcritics @OdiaMovieDB https://t.co/37hQ57AdkO
https://twitter.com/TaraniTrotter/status/1232506655998447616?s=19
2. Shola aur Shabnam (1961) *ing  Dharmendra n Tarla Mehta, music Khayyam was dubbed into Odia as Saathi. It had Odia version songs like Phula ku jhure, Jane ki khojuchi, Chhadi re Chhadi.. https://t.co/exKpRl9gfQ
https://twitter.com/TaraniTrotter/status/1232935253615886337?s=19
The Odia record cover courtesy Simadri bhai. I particularly liked one song very much.. Phula ku khoje. All songs lyrics by Ganesh Mohapatra, music legendary Khayyam Sahab n sung by AK Dev,Lela Ghosh n Meena Patki https://t.co/nqZauacZA6

Would it be possible for you to upload such videos of longer duration, or it's against your editorial policy? Such thematic creations - like one on Janha or Sapana - can effectively obviate the need for playlists. It will also salvage many neglected songs. https://t.co/NLTaZOIz64
https://twitter.com/SavitriEraParty/status/1231957155915423744?s=19

This is arguably the most prominent connoisseur's favorite from Odia films of all times.
Which other songs, according to you, should be on a list of such film songs? Please restrict to film songs only.
https://twitter.com/OdiaCulture/status/1231275297380519938?s=19
Since we are talking of good songs, here is a list of must-listen pre-70s songs that I had posted a couple of years back. I think all are available in YouTube, specifically
@odiamelody @NathTusar Please add/edit the list. Then, we will go to the 80s and so on https://t.co/DHYllyDCax
ବୋଉଲୋ କି କହିବି is popular and musically great but is not exactly a poet's song. A connoisseur's song, in my opinion, should be great individually in lyrics, music and as a combination too. My humble opinion
I meant songs that appeal both to intellect and emotion
Well, we may not restrict to films only. I find this really hilarious https://t.co/knV9YLfCDX

Hrudayara Ei Sunyata... sung by Sekhar Ghosh in ‘ Samar- Selim-Simon ‘ ( 1979)... composed by Mushir... penned by Nizam.... https://t.co/0b6VwdwJCo

I think we should create a 'best comic songs' in Odia thread.

Bhanja Sangeeta... was released by INRECO... almost around the same time...
That was a satire on Round Table Conference... but quite interestingly HMV allowed it... though owned by British... usually they never allowed such recordings... many such are recorded under Swadeshi label of Megaphone ... under the guise of Comic  Song...

https://twitter.com/odiamelody/status/1231540688489254912?s=19
There is a vast recording of Non movie songs... we don’t have any document on the labels and records pressed in the Shellac era... to add to it... prolific recording was done by Govt itself as part of publicity ... featuring all eminent artists of the era...
https://twitter.com/odiamelody/status/1231772464851693568?s=19
Once this phase of collection of labels of Shellac era is over.. in fact there is little document available to have an idea of how many records were pressed...this discography will surely be a collaborative effort  with people like you...
That’s the reason ..... the company soon died... and T-Series..Venus..Tips... reigned the scene... and the company itself changed many ownerships... survived because of vast repertoire of movie songs of golden era....
No it’s not about Banikantha..he was a legend... but about the recording company ..they do have a role in promotion... hadn’t it been for little known INRECO in those days ....Jitendriya Haripal’s song couldn’t have seen light of the day.....
All these documentation... would really help in Odia Discography... hope such one really sees light of the day...
Don’t know why... but they don’t have the records... years of recordings by eminent artistes are also not there...
There is a vast recording of Non movie songs... we don’t have any document on the labels and records pressed in the Shellac era... to add to it... prolific recording was done by Govt itself as part of publicity ... featuring all eminent artists of the era...
Of the recording of earlier era... HMV only brought out two CDs...of Banikantha..only 40 songs...and that too recorded from discs...they don’t have the master discs..and the companies as Megaphone, Senola, Hindustan, Shahensha Records, Kohinoor, Taj Records etc..are also there...
Banikantha was the most recorded artiste of HMV from Odisha... seems these are from their recordings taken from disc in late 90s...
Surya Deo is there... who had found identity of some of these early singers...think Virtual Academy ... Archives...with people like you should collaborate  ... and all other who have gathered information... into this Discography..
https://twitter.com/odiamelody/status/1231590967167397889?s=19
Yes... that’s the reason... he was the most recorded... but others also sold... being the pioneers ... they could have promoted others as well....
That’s the reason ..... the company soon died... and T-Series..Venus..Tips... reigned the scene... and the company itself changed many ownerships... survived because of vast repertoire of movie songs of golden era....
Also true... but HMV shouldn’t have limited its catalog... should have encouraged other artistes... that’s the reason so many recordings are there on other labels... all the traditional .... folk and modern...HMV had this elitist approach...
Yes... true... Akshaya Mohanty was denied by HMV... and all his early recordings are on Senola... with growing popularity... HMV ..... recorded him around 1967....l

Yes, agree on that. HMV's approach seems elitist, I don't think Banikantha had any say in it. In fact I think he was crucial in elevating less privileged instrumentalists of his time— who else would have recorded Ghuduki in a gramophone record in that time
Primitive? Enormously difficult and complex, while also being more ancient. (Odisha has a tendency of preserving ancient things longer) Often limited exposure to his repertoire might mislead into thinking it is something simplistic.
https://twitter.com/pattaprateek/status/1231612209714757634?s=19
Of course. Tastes of audience evolve over time, and recording only reflects that. Pretty sure many commoners of today's generation won't hesitate to call 1909 records harsh and unpleasant. Ear needs to be calibrated to enjoy each kind of music :)
For everyone's awareness, a few more songs of Banikantha's gramophone records seem to have been restored and put online. Around 6-7. They seem to be working to digitise them. Here https://t.co/Bv62W3Jwfv
Yes, I know we are talking of the company, not him. Just mentioning the move from strictly Odissi classical to folkish tunes to modern (Banikantha did some transitional ones, somewhat b/w modern and Odissi). HMV seems to have been very slow and hesitant expanding though
https://twitter.com/pattaprateek/status/1231616028804694016?s=19
Yes. I hope a book is created someday. I also really think Akashvani Odia should create a dedicated program to educate Odia people about these early artists and play the records over radio. That would be really impactful.
This dasa-rāga-mālikā was composed by the poet Gaurahari Parichha of Paralakhemundi. In his exceptionally long life (1794-1893), he translated Gitagobinda into Odia, as several Odissi chaupadis. Some researchers ascribe the Prahallada Nataka to Gaurahari. #OdissiMusic
Yes. An anthology was published by Gajapati Press long ago in 1926 (which has fortunately been digitised) https://t.co/NcfJHC9EqZ
One of the best Odissi albums till date, I would say. 'Manasija Manamohana' in Raghu Babu's pristine voice still echoes in my mind. #OdissiMusic https://t.co/wKZfEC96jF
https://twitter.com/pattaprateek/status/1228013970872655877?s=19
Yes we do have exhaustive anthologies in Odia, but a significant chunk of his writing is yet to be published. I do not think much of his work has been translated; I have come across a handful of poems here and there, but not more than that.
All of them are traditional swaras, with the lone exception of 'E Ghana Dina Eka'— which as far as I know is Balakrushna Das's composition.
Traditional music of Odissi Sankirtana. With roots in the 15th century, primarily  due to the Panchasakha. Later the Vaishnava movement would lead to these tunes being spread to almost every corner of the state, pioneered by poets such as Gopalakrusna & Gauracharana. #OdissiMusic
New video | The Odissi Project | Veteran Pala virtuoso 'Gayaka Rasasagara' Bairagi Behera sings an elaborate classic Anandabhairabi : ଆଜ କେଳିକ ଉତୁକୀ ଶ୍ରୀଛାମୁ୍ରେ, traditionally ascribed to Bhanja. His fervour is infectious. Watch here : https://t.co/92gHX2oD0T #OdissiMusic https://t.co/DXBrTxWdy0

Befitting for Trump visit.

Like Taichung rice, does America feature in any of our old songs? PL-480 was very much a common topic then. Samar-Saelim-Simon (1979) was debut movie of Mushir...the movie was unsuccessful....but the songs are still  popular... Sekhar Ghosh achieved fame with ..''Hrudayara Ei Sunyataku…..'' https://t.co/sYkK8Ywu8k
Both 78 RPM schellacs and microgroove 45 RPM continued to be published simultaneously till 1970...''Adina Megha'' (1970) had some memorable compositions...both the record formats of this successful movie... https://t.co/KbTzcC8Eh3

Mr. R. Subbarao, noted archaeologist, gives the following reasons to show that the Western Gangas and Eastern Gangas didn't belong to one and same dynasty.
1. The early Gangas of Mysore were Jainas and belong to Ikshvaku dynasty and solar line and their gotra was Kanvayana.
https://twitter.com/ashishsarangi/status/1236675441408094211?s=19
But the Gangas of Kalinga were Saivas and belonged to Lunar line, gotra- Atreya.
2. In the numerous copper plates of Gangas of Kalinga there is no mention that they migrated from Mysore.
3. The symbols &seals on copper plate grants of Mysore Gangas & Kalinga Gangas are different.
Gangas of Kalinga patronize Odia literature.
https://t.co/sSdTbJBIRQ
History of Odisha by Dr. K.C.Panigrahi.
Page no 116.
They (Ganga Dynasty) imbibed odia customs and adopted odia language. They also became the patrons of the Odishan literature.
https://twitter.com/ashishsarangi/status/1236668118836989953?s=19
The origin of the Eastern Gangas is not clearly established. Differences are there. But that does not mean they were not odias. Ok, if they were not odias along with Kesharis (as you mentioned), then from where they were. Also the location of  Mahisa state is still not clear.
Also see the language of "ascharjya charcha chaya" and "bajragiti". We all know the timings of these literary works.
* Ascharjya charjyachaya

Rudrasinidhi is considered to be the first work of prose in odia language. It was written by Abhadutta Narayana Swami. This was written in 13th century and it refers to the education system of then Odisha.
Refer book : Medival Orissa by Shishir Kumar Panda
Markanda Das composed the first koili in Odia just before the beginning of the age of Sarala Das. His composition Kesava Koili describes the pain of separation of Yasoda from Krishna. He is also known to compose the epic Daasagriba badha, Jnaanodaya Koili.
For above tweet refer book : A History of Indian Literature, 500-1399: From Courtly to the Popular by Sisir Kumar Das.
In his book Palm Leaf Etchings of Orissa, Mr. Durga Prasad Patnaik wrote that the earliest books in Odia language are the Sisu Veda and Saptanga. These two books provide links between the early Odia and the Odia of Sarala Das and Markanda Das.
