From the early period, a handful of gramophone records survive. In the parampara itself, other songs from these early gurus survive. Fortunately I have been able to learn a tiny sliver of these songs and correlate things. Much remains to be discovered.
Thanks. One hopes so. The Akademi even had unpublished manuscripts of some of their writings, including detailed discussions on music and notations. They are probably nowhere to be found now, after decades of negligence.
Banikantha sang from the first day of AIR Cuttack until his death in 83. Countless Odissi, Chhanda, Champu and other traditional songs. As of the last few years, they are not even playing a single Odissi of his. I wonder where it all disappeared.
Similarly, not a single record of Singhari Shyamsundar Kar being played apart from Dinabandhaba Daitari. Despite being called 'Adiguru', I have not heard a single Odissi of his from AIR presently. Same goes for the great Tarini Charan Patra.
