We call them 'jaataka' in Odia. I don't know if it's done anymore but as recent as in the early 2000s, 'jaataka's in Odisha were inscribed on palm leaves with an iron stylus. We've palm leaf jaatakas dating back to the 1910-20s in our house.

My grandfather(born 1902) used to tell there were crackers in his childhood. Explosive powder wrapped in dries palm leaves with a fuse to ignite.Were sold in 1910 in even rural Odisha.
