On #InternationalWomensDay, remembering Kumudini Debi, fondly called 'Kumuda Bai' - perhaps the first female artiste from Odisha to be recorded. Her 1909 rendition ହସିହସି ନବଛଇଳାରେ - a bestseller back then, set to a seamless blend of multiple Odissi ragas. https://t.co/roJzxUBgJu https://t.co/3Aia9xdxsc

Rare : 1909 Odissi record. Lokenath Kanungo, the royal singer (ରାଜସଙ୍ଗୀତଜ୍ଞ) of the Talcher court, one of the princely states of Odisha. He sings a chaupadi of the poet Gobinda. Kanungo was known for his exceptionally high register. #OdissiMusic https://t.co/9v4RwDb5BS https://t.co/LBmZvnE0xd

Yes... I have heard this announcement of the singers in the recordings in the early years... mostly in the first decade of 1900s... in Odia... we have some recordings ... where the singer announce their name... one such is in the recording of 1909 recording of Lokenath Kanungo..

Interesting bit : Odissi maestro Basudeb Mahapatra (born 1870s) had turned to Christianity in his later life but he sung 'radha-kanta radha-mohana he gobinda' as usual. He hailed from a Rajaguru family of Chikiti. One of the first voices in Odia to be recorded (1909).

This reminds me of the Victoria bhajanas a few Odia poets wrote during British rule. All set to traditional chhandas but oh so out of context.
Then she remembered something that goes ରାଧାକାନ୍ତ... This evening I realised that this was Basudeb Mahapatra's ରାଧାକାନ୍ତ ରାଧାମୋହନ ହେ ଗୋବିନ୍ଦ ଲବେ ଦୟା ନାହିଁକି, one of the earliest Odia songs recorded on Gramophone. This was recorded in 1909 but released only in 1916.

Rare : Bhikari Bal sings 'Netrananda Pasara', a chaupadi by Kisora Chandra Rajendra Deba, 19th-century ruler of Chikiti, Ganjam. Enormously popular in the 1900s, this was one of the first Odia songs to be recorded— by Kumudini Debi in 1909. @odiamelody https://t.co/X1nQNFhzfS
Thanks to @odiamelody, we have the fortune of listening to the version by Kumudini Debi too. #OdissiMusic https://t.co/dozHRwmGGt
Thanks. Found it in a late 1880s anthology of Odissi songs.

White Tiger In Orissa Forests
Perhaps one of earliest documented record of a White Tiger in the forests of Orissa was in 1909. A white tigress, 8 feet 8 inches in length, was shot in Dhenkanal. The ground colour was pure white, and the stripes were a deep reddish black colour.
https://twitter.com/OrissaWild/status/1252525814521819136?s=19
The skin was presented the Rajah of Dhenekanal who mounted and placed in his palace. It is said that shikaris (hunters of this country or Orissa) say that it was the only white tiger they had ever seen. @PIBBhubaneswar @districtadmndkl @ntca_india @TOIBhubaneswar @bijay_TNIE
Only in Nandan Kanan Zoo now. In Nandan Kanan during 1980, for the first time white cubs were to normal coloured parents. Researchers have not been able to establish them to any known white tiger lineage.
