Odisha Odia collated 1906

Was waiting for so long to hear this 1st Odia song ever recorded in a gramophone record. Such was the power of Sheikh Khan Mohamed's (Ctc) voice which prompted the record co to try it in Mar-Apr 1906 n get it recorded by William Gausberg at then Calcutta

Had met Indramani Sahu, the recordman of Odisha, way back in 2013 to hear this song, but unfortunately his player was not functioning. At that time he was fit n fine, but not now at almost 89 years of age when i met him recently. Still he is full of energy https://t.co/OM6MerWbr9
This record comes from the personal collection of Sri Indramani Sahu. Thanks to Odia Melody for painstakingly collecting rare Odia record songs from various sources, removing noise, digitalising it n uploading in YouTube for larger Odia fans across the globe. (guess the cover pix) https://t.co/y1sQA9Rtsp
Heard that Odia melody is owned by a mysterious person 🤪

That’s a nice find. Kinnear’ Book on Gramophone Company Recording..lists his recordings in 1906. Columbia merged with Gramophone Co in 1931...they had extensive Odia recordings... but haven’t come across Gokul Srichandan’s... will surely look..the catalogue though do not mention. https://t.co/h7NPTT9Zdl

Yes... would look forward to it... the recorded artistes of Columbia... in the catalog till 1957... do not mention Gokul Srichandan... but will scout.., 10 April 20
One or two of Apanna’s records remain to be archived... kudos to you for tracking all those ancient lyrics... of not only of Apanna, but also the early 1906-09 Odia recordings..all the thanks to you would be less for the effort..🙏
Yes... there are only few Odia recordings... the first one in 1906... hardly 17-18 records were pressed... with only five artistes in the first decade... of 20th century. The 20s also saw fewer recordings.

@odiamelody An article by Dr. Kalipad Das (Mangalabag, Cuttack) in the magazine 'Pratibha', 1994. It has been mentioned that Gokul Srichandan had recorded ଖ ଚମ୍ପୂ - ଖେଳାଲୋଳାଖଞ୍ଜନାକ୍ଷି କି ସାହସ କଲୁରେ, ଖରାପ ତୁ ହେଲୁରେ under Columbia records sometime before 1934. https://t.co/bU1U1s3gOm

Yes, have seen Kinnear's list. Perhaps Gokul Srichandan would have continued to record more until his demise in 1947. Please post sample pages from this Columbia catalogue— I am very interested to know what Singhari recorded. Perhaps I could ask Shyamamani Devi about those songs.
Khanu Mian's record : Asuchanti Brajabasi (ଆସୁଛନ୍ତି ବ୍ରଜବାସୀ ଧୀରେ ଧୀରେ ଚାଲି ଚାଲି) is now on YouTube. Characteristic Odissi swing, set to Jhula tāla. First recorded voice in Odia (1906). One is indebted to @odiamelody for their good work. Listen : https://t.co/1UEvATfZ6o https://t.co/yZvkCrEVB2

@odiamelody has done a lot more for Odia culture than most. They should write a book on how this idea originated, how each record was painstakingly procured and the hard work that goes behind the scenes. We'd have known next to nothing about Odia records without the channel.

Khan Mohammed (Khanu Mian) is believed to be the first recorded voice in Odia, recorded in 1907 by Gramophone Company.
But according to Australian researcher Michael Kinnear, Hemendra Mohan Bose of Kolkata had recorded Odia artistes on cylinder well before that

He even says French label Pathe which reissued some of Bose's recording on discs could have reissued some of these Odia recordings, though he is not sure.
The name(s) of artiste(s) is/are not known.

Though some of cylinders were transferred to Pathe label... none of them were in Odia... the list of labels and number of records released till 1911... from Michael Kinnear’s second volume of early Indian recordings mentions ... 22 Odia records were released by Gramophone Co. .. https://t.co/r79GL3rWpQ

Khanu Mian of Cuttack was a great Odissi musician of his time. All of his gramophone records are Odissi chaupadis, set to traditional Ragas Purabi, Kanada Kedara, Khambaja. He was one of Kabichandra Kali Charan Patnaik's gurus. Here's what Kali Babu writes in his autobiography : https://t.co/o3Y25ZCGh9

Of course. Meanwhile, found information from Kabichandra's writings that Khanu Mian was from Bakharabad. And that 'ନ ଅନାଲୋ ମିତ କାଳିଆକୁ' which Lokenath Kanungo has recorded in 1909 is a chaupadi written by Khan Mohammed himself.

Kanhu Charan Mohanty was born on 11 August 1906 in Nagabali village of Sonepur, India, to an Odia family. He is an elder brother of Gopinath Mohanty (1914–91) who was also a Jnanpith Award-winning (1974) Odia novelist. ( wikipedia )

A separate Jagannath/Dadhibamana Temple was later added in the complex by Raja Surya Pratap Mahindra Bahadur (1906-25). The annual Ratha Jatra was initially carried out from this temple, but later on started from Balarama temple. #Odisha #OdishaTourism @bbsrpulse @ashishsarangi https://t.co/18qLY95NWV

When did the first modern skill training institute open in Odisha? Formally in 1906, as the Boy's Industrial School in Baleswar. Today, is the Balasore Technical School. I end the year paying tributes to an institution born before my father was, and continues to do great work. https://t.co/FiUbXyy2hK
